Burgas obtained an apparatus for measurement and monitoring of electromagnetic emissions. It will be operated by two municipal employees, who were trained how to work with it. The apparatus was bought after a suggestion by mayor Dimitar Nikolov, supported by the local parliament.
The apparatus is mobile and can be used in different “hot spots” in town. It can be supplied both with electricity or solar energy. It can function at a temperature range from -10 to +50 degrees. Every 6 minutes it gives data, that can be watched from a distance and visualized in graphics. Its memory can save data for a period of about one year.
The apparatus was bought because of the numerous signals by citizens, bothered by the electromagnetic emissions of the mobile operators’ anntenas and their influence on the health of people, said the secretary of the Municipality Bozhidar Kanchev.
From now on when citizens’ signals are received, the apparatus will be installed on the mentioned public or private buildings and the emissions will be measured. If any abnormal values are ascertained, appropriate measures will be taken, even uninstalling of anntenas.
Research on the influence of electromagnetic emissions on human health have been made for a short time and the results have been contradictory so far. At the end of the previous year the Municipality and ombudsman Tanyo Atanasov organized a public discussion on the topic. Representatives of M-Tel, Globul, Vivacom, Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, National Centre for Protection of Health and the Commission for Regulation of Communications took part in the discussion.
During 2009 two inspections were made on the emissions of mobile anntenas, the first was made by the National Centre for Protection of Health and the second by scientific workers from the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.
