Give in to temptation—don’t miss the Gabrovo Drama Theater “Racho Stoyanov” performance of Oscar Wilde’s novel The Portrait of Dorian Gray, on Wednesday at 7:00 PM at the NHK Cultural Center.
Oscar Wilde’s famous novel comes to life on stage under the direction of Veselka Kuncheva, who, along with Polina Hristova, also co-wrote the adaptation. The production has won the Askeer ’24 Award for Scenography by Marieta Golomehova and received two additional nominations for the prestigious prize.
The stage interpretation focuses on the separation of soul from flesh and explores how we try to immortalize our mortality—to cling to it, to make it last forever. “The battle between flesh and soul is, of course, an eternal theme. But especially in our modern world, I see that temptations for the flesh are increasing while those for spirituality are decreasing. The nourishment we give our flesh is in vast quantities compared to what we give our souls. We truly risk drowning our souls in the midst of consumption,” shares director Veselka Kuncheva.
The cast includes nearly the entire ensemble of the Gabrovo Theater, along with guest actors Blagovest Mitsev (as Dorian Gray) and Tsveti Peniashki (as Lord Henry Wotton). Dimo Dimov takes on the role of Basil Hallward, the artist of the portrait. The cast also features Melin Erdinch, Tanya Yorgova, Nadezhda Petkova, Atanas Dimitrov-Fozi, Alexander Andreev, Violina Dotseva, Adriana Dimova, Dilyan Nikolov, Dobrinka Toseva, Magdalena Slavcheva, and Polya Yordanova.
