Mayor Dimitar Nikolov "lit" the candles symbolically of a giant sand cake specially made for the 10th edition of the Festival of Sand Figures. Hundreds of citizens of Burgas had the opportunity to view the new fabulous pieces of sand on the first day. They are creations of 21 sculptors from Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine, Turkey, Germany, Latvia, Portugal and Russia. Especially for the opening with attractive performances were talents from NMSSI "Pancho Vladigerov", "Dune" ballet and theater schools for children and youth.
"This fabulous festival has become one of the emblems of the city and is one of the most anticipated events in its cultural program," Mayor Dimitar Nikolov said during the opening of this year's edition. The Deputy Mayor of Culture and Education Yordanka Ananieva also attended the opening.
In the sandy town there are 50 characters of celebrities, emblematic historical figures and fairy-tale characters. They are built of 5 600 tons of sand, interwoven in 20 compositions. The Sand Festival will be open until the end of September.
